The other day, we had breakfast at Dishoom, the Bombay Irani cafe at Kings Cross where English food comes with an Indian twist. The cavernous but elegant converted warehouse is cosy, beautifully furnished and lit. Waiters smile. The barman adds spices to cocktails. Joss sticks burn and the air smells sweet. You feel instantly comfortable.
Tea was served. I drank Assam and others had chai – spiced tea with milk.
I ordered the Big Bombay. “Your plate will be laden with abundant Akuri, char-striped smoked streaky bacon from The Ginger Pig, peppery Shropshire pork sausages, masala baked beans, grilled field mushroom, grilled tomato and buttered pau buns. Too good.” You will never finish it – everybody said.
We drank more tea and everybody glowed.
